ME Book Club Book Chosen for Jan-Mar 2014

Friday night I met with my book club, one that mirrors the MomEvolving (ME) Book Club on Goodreads.  We just completed Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline.  Honestly, if you are looking for a good, quick read which introduces you to a part of US history, this is it.

The book tells the story of how, in an effort to rid large cities of unwanted street children, orphans were transported to the Midwest on trains to new families–some of which had less than ideal motivations for adopting the children. The book is well written and moves quickly, which worked perfectly over the holidays when I felt I was operating with half my brain anyway.

One of the things that I like about participating in a book club (our club has about 10 women in it) is that you honestly never know what you are going to read.  We each put several books into the mix and then pick at random at the end of each meeting. Sometimes people put in books I know of and have on my personal “to read” list, other times I’ve never heard of the book. More often than not, I am exposed to new books which I wouldn’t necessarily have selected but really enjoy reading.

The MomEvolving (ME) Book Club on Goodreads is an open group which mirrors the one I participate in locally. If you’re interested, please feel free to join the Goodreads group where I will be hosting a discussion of our latest selection: Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo.  The discussion will open on March 14, 2014.

Happy reading!
