The thought of that morning twelve years ago still brings tears; tears of shock, tears of fear and mostly overwhelming sadness that there was just so much hatred in the world. I was pregnant with our first child and wondered about the world I was bringing him into.
In the days and years that followed, we witnessed some of the best and worst of humanity. For both my son and daughter I hope that they will never have to witness or grieve as a nation, and frankly a world, for the atrocity that we bore witness to on September 11, 2001.
My wish for my children, and all future generations, is that they know a world without hatred and violence. Some may call me naïve, but I don’t believe that I am. I simply believe that we have a power to change things and it may start with a thought or simply a kind gesture. I may not be able to change the world, but I can instill in my children the importance of kindness. Who knows? Through their kind words or gestures, others might be incented to act positively and we would be just a little closer to world that I dream for them.
So I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from Mahatma Gandhi:
If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. … We need not wait to see what others do.
Peace~
