just a mom figuring it out one day at a time

One Fish Two Fish…

“As soon as I give her this $2.00, she is going to win a fish.”

The words were barely out of my husband’s mouth when KC grabbed the first, of ten ping pong balls, and deftly tossed it directly into a tiny glass jar. KC jumped up and down and squealed with delight and my husband and I,well, exchanged horrified looks.

Then my friend who was with us added, “You know, those things live forever.”

It’s not that we don’t like fish. We do. We actually have a tank that evolved from a smaller fish bowl and a micro tank before that which all developed when we rescued a fish that was left to die in an empty house. No, it’s not that we don’t like fish, it’s just that the addition of this fish would mean that we would now need to maintain not one, but TWO separate tanks/bowls.

Bad parents that we are, we actually tried to see if KC would be willing to give the goldfish to her little girlfriend who was with us and had not been so lucky to win a fish.

She look crestfallen and before I knew it, I told her we would keep it. In came horrified look #2 from my husband. I pulled him aside and told him we can’t not let her take home the fish she won, she was so excited. And after all, if we did prohibit her from bringing it home we would never hear the end of it.

The fish, “Carnie,” is now home in her new fishbowl.  When I came down this morning, KC’s head was propped up on her hands, her elbows leaning on the counter, and she was watching her new fish.

“Hey mom, you know, Carnie looks awfully lonely. Maybe we need to get her another goldfish friend.”

I knew it was coming, I had just hoped to have one cup of coffee before the asking began.
